Prohibition Against Using Oils
In Session 3 participants are asked to read through verse 36 of Exodus 30. Verses 37 - 38 contain prohibitions against these oils for use outside the Temple or with "strangers." Some have expressed fears of committing an offense against God if the Holy Anointing Oil or Holy Incense were actually used today. If such a conversation or concern should come up in your group, please refer to Jeremiah 31:31-34, which addresses the New Covenant superseding the Old.
Group leaders may also wish to share the following response as taken from Healing Oils of the Bible (pp. 68-69):
The Holy Anointing Oil of Exodus 30 was part of the original Covenant of God with the Moses and the Israelites. This was a conditional covenant depending on the good behavior of the Israelites. They did not behave. When God's patience was pushed to the extreme, he delivered a bill of divorcement which nullified the Mosaic Covenant. (see Jeremiah 31:31-34 or pp. 68-69 of Healing Oils of the Bible). A new covenant was then proposed in Jeremiah to be one of the heart and applied to individuals. According to most authorities, the prohibition against using the formulas for Holy Anointing Oil and Holy Incense in Exodus 30 were part of the old covenant which is no longer in effect. Hence, it is now okay to use the blends of Exodus 30 without restriction. However, not all authorities agree on this. So it is a matter you, as an individual, will have to decide for yourself.
